Morefield's Leather Flower
(Clematis morefieldii)
Description: A vine growing to 16 feet in length and covered with dense white hairs. The flower is urn shaped and pinkish and blooms in late May through early July. It is often found near seeps under mixed hardwoods on rocky south and southwest facing mountain slopes. Trees often found near it include smoketree and chinkapin oak.

morefield_map.gif (19257 bytes)Forestry Considerations: Use of fire is unlikely on these sites, but mechanical site prep and clearcutting would damage it. Light thinnings might be tolerated. Care should be taken during thinning operations to avoid direct impacts to the plant.

Distribution by County: This plant is only known from Madison County in Alabama.
